Examinations

Hungarian language classes are free of charge for students registered in full-time programs at the Technical University of Budapest. Non registered students can also participate in the classes for a fee (indicated in the course descriptions). Intensive Survival Hungarian

For beginners. 50-60 hours of instruction in 2-3 weeks, 4-5 hours a day. Introduction and practice of the basic elements of grammar and the most commonly used everyday expressions and situations. Includes introductory lectures on Hungarian culture and civilisation.
Tuition: US $400
Organised occasionally by requirement.

Beginning Hungarian - One or Two-Semester Credit Course

56 hours in 14 weeks, 2x2 hours a week; or 84 hours in 14 weeks, 3x2 hours a week. University level credit course covers the basic elements of Hungarian grammar and speech including the most commonly used everyday expressions. Includes systematic tests and an examination at the end.
Tuition: US $400, US $600

Basic Hungarian - First Level Certificate (120 hours)

2 semesters - 2x14 weeks - 2x2 hours/week.
4 semesters - 4x14 weeks - 1x2 hours/week.
Designed for English speaking students who are studying in Hungary. Grants a first level certificate after a minimum of 120 hours of instruction and successful completion of an examination. Instruction builds on what students have already learned and becomes supportive to their University stay. Final knowledge will equal but not exceed the advanced tourist level. Free for students registered at the Technical University of Budapest.
Tuition: US $800

One Semester Intensive Hungarian for Beginners (Lower Intermediate Level Certificate - 400 hours)

24 hours x 14 week/semester. Takes students from the beginner level in one semester of full-time study. The course is intensively taught and has a final exam. Grants a lower intermediate level certificate after 350 hours of instruction.
Tuition: US $2,200

Preparatory Course in Hungarian

2 semester
Takes students from the beginner level to the advanced level in two semesters The first semester of full-time study is identical to the One semester Intensive Hungarian for Beginners (350 hours).
During the second semester there are 12-14 language classes per week. Mathematics, physics, computing and engineering drawing are taught in Hungarian for a further 16-14 hours per week. Subjects such as chemistry, freehand drawing for students of architecture can be taken optionally in 1-2 hours/week. Students can have regular consultations in either semester with a tutor who will advise on academic and personal matters. The course is followed by a comprehensive examination which qualifies students for studies in engineering and technology at Hungarian colleges and universities. The second semester language classes can also be taken apart from any engineering and technology courses. The second semester classes then count as an advanced language course in Hungarian. Students are given a formal report at the end of this preparatory one year program.

Advanced Hungarian for Academic and Technological Purposes

1st and 2nd semester + 6 hours/week
3rd and 4th semesters + 3 hours/week.
This course is part of the curriculum in the first two years for students from abroad who are studying technology and engineering in Hungarian after completing the two semester Preparatory Course in Hungarian. Besides the teaching hours, extra hours of consultation are also offered. Successful completion of a final semester of the second year grants an advanced proficiency level certificate in Hungarian. Free for students registered at the Technical University of Budapest.

Post-Examination Hungarian Language Classes

1 semester + 2 hours/week
Organised for interested students who have completed Advanced Hungarian for Academic and Technological Purposes.
Tuition: US $200

Hungarian Language Examination

The Language Examination Centre of BUTE (Budapest University of Technology and Economics) regularly offers three types of examinations (Oral, Written and Complex) to foreign learners of the Hungarian language at three different levels (Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced). The examinations are approved by the Hungarian National Committee for the Accreditation of Language Examinations. See: BME / BUTE HUNGARIAN LANGUAGE EXAMINATIONS
